A new Ebola hospital checklist that doctors are sharing on Twitter and in a blog post is meant to help them better prepare for the arrival of a new patient with the virus.
Dr. Bruce Ruggiero, chief of infectious disease at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, says the checklist is intended to be a helpful resource for doctors and other health care workers.
In an interview, he says he hopes that by sharing it, the public will be able to get a better sense of what to expect before and after the new patient arrives.
“What we are trying to do is to make sure that people have a sense of when and where they should be in terms of when they should take precautions, what they should wear, when they need to be monitored, how to communicate with their families,” Ruggiello said.
Ruggierllo says the goal is to get as much information out there as possible about the patient, the environment they are in, and the general health of the community.
“It’s a new world and the virus is different, so we’re trying to be very thoughtful and thoughtful about everything we do and make sure we understand what’s going on in that particular environment,” he said.
In the last week, the United States has seen two new confirmed cases of the virus in its first three weeks of this year, bringing the total number of cases in the country to more than 1,200.
The first case of the new virus in Texas was reported on Friday by the state health department, and officials said the man was infected at a hospital in Austin.
Officials in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro area reported the second confirmed case on Monday, saying the man had come in contact with the first patient and that his symptoms were not the same.
In addition to providing additional information about the new patients, Ruggierello says he is also sharing his personal experience with the new illness with the public.
“I’ve had a long career, I’ve seen a lot of things, and I know a lot about the illness, so I’m hoping that people will be interested in sharing that with the general public,” Riggiero said.
“We need to get people in and out of hospitals, and we need to do a better job of monitoring and diagnosing the virus,” he added.
“This is a new virus, and it’s a huge public health threat.
We’re all trying to get out there and get this thing under control, but we’re all also trying to make a difference.”
The checklist Ruggieri is sharing was developed by the Texas Department of State Health Services and the University at Buffalo.
It was developed and tested on the Dallas hospital, and has been shared on social media.
